Job Description

EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER (TEMPORARY POSITION)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: To work collaboratively with general and special education teachers and other teacher assistants to provide interpreting assistance to students. Provide for basic needs of students and other duties may be assigned.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Interprets/transliterates communications between hearing persons and deaf person.
  • Provides assistance to instructors by translating academic instructional material to deaf students in the classroom.
  • Attends classes with students and interprets instructions on a one-to-one or small group basis in vocational subject areas.
  • May interpret textbook materials for reading and non-reading deaf students.
  • Serve as an interpreter for students who attend IEPs.
  • Provide interpreting assistance to health care staff and other personnel in communicating with students.
  • Provide assistance to staff in the vocational evaluation process by interpreting standardized tests for deaf students.
  • Provide interpretation during telephone communication.
  • Prepares report for IEP about student use of interpreting services.
  • Serves as a member of the educational team by interpreting, translating and assuring through the instructor's questions, testing procedures and other indicators that the student has understood the message and provides feedback to teaching staff regarding the student's understanding of material.
  • Interprets meetings, hearings, workshops and other presentations regarding a variety of topics and including advanced vocabulary and theories.
  • Interprets for deaf persons with varying levels of communication skills including minimal language skills, deaf/blind persons and professionals.
  • Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a professional personal appearance.
  • Adhere to district health and safety procedures.
  • Adhere to Board Policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have an Educational Interpreters' Associates Degree from a state-approved program.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :

Knowledge of the problems of the deaf culture and the deaf community. Knowledge of American Sign Language. Knowledge of methods of working with deaf children and adults. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to understand and get along well with deaf and hearing persons. Ability to fluently interpret communications between hearing person and hearing impaired persons. Ability to interpret at varied vocabulary, language and educational levels. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, parents and staff. Ability to interpret the terminology of instructional material meaningful to the deaf. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A Valid EIPA Performance score of 4.0 or higher, and obtain EIPA Elementary or Secondary Endorsement; or valid Michigan BEI-II Certification; or valid Deaf Interpreter credential and Certification recognized by the Division on Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DODHH). Requires Deaf/Blind Endorsement.

B. Complaint/Grievance Procedure Notice

I. Any person believing that the Calhoun Intermediate School District or any of the District's staff has inadequately applied the principles and/or regulations of non-discrimination laws or district non-discrimination policies may bring forward a complaint, which shall be referred to as a grievance to the district's Civil Rights Coordinator.

II. The person who believes s/he has a valid basis for grievance shall discuss the grievance informally and on a verbal basis with the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, who shall in turn investigate the complaint and reply with verbal answer to the complainant. S/He may initiate formal procedures according to the following steps:

Step 1
A written statement of the grievance signed by the complainant shall be submitted to the District's Civil Rights Coordinator within five (5) business days of receipt of answers to the informal complaint. The Coordinator shall further investigate the matters of grievance and reply in writing to the complainant within five (5) business days.

Step 2
If the complainant wishes to appeal the decision of the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, s/he may submit a signed statement of appeal to the Superintendent of Schools within five (5) business days after receipt of the Coordinator's response. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant within ten (10) business days.

Step 3
If the complainant remains unsatisfied, s/he may appeal through a signed written statement to the Board of Education within five (5) business days of his/her receipt of the Superintendent's response in step two. In an attempt to resolve the grievance, the Board of Education shall meet with the concerned parties and their representative within twenty (20) business days of the receipt of such an appeal. A copy of the Board's disposition of the appeal shall be sent to each concerned party within ten (10) business days of this meeting.

The District's Coordinator, on request, will provide a copy of the District's grievance procedure and investigate all complaints in accordance with this procedure.
