Environmental Risk Assessor/Toxicologist

 

A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. You must provide documentation that you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to qualify.

 

Provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents with a primary focus on Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).  

 

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Environmental Risk Assessor/Toxicologist : $90,000 to $100,000

Pay commensurate with experience.

Environmental Risk Assessor/Toxicologist Responsibilities Include:  

  • Provide A&AS technical support for environmental restoration projects conducted under CERCLA and/or RCRA, including BRAC-related restoration activities.
  • Support scoping and planning for RI/FS efforts, including participation in meetings and development of inputs to define data needs to support risk assessments (e.g., DQO discussions).
  • Develop, review, and contribute to technical deliverables and supporting materials, including portions of:
  • Conceptual Site Models (CSM)
  • Sampling and analysis planning inputs (e.g., SAP) and quality documentation inputs (e.g., QAPP-related content, as applicable)
  • Human Health Risk Assessments (HHRA) and Ecological Risk Assessments (ERA)
  • Exposure pathway evaluations, toxicity assessments, uncertainty analyses, and identification of key data gaps
  • Responses to client and regulator comments on technical documents, as directed
  • Perform exposure and toxicity evaluations and support quantitative risk characterization for chemicals, including PFAS, across soil, groundwater, surface water, and other media.
  • Conduct structured literature searches and evidence synthesis to support hazard conclusions, including: study screening, data extraction, documentation of methods, and evaluation of study quality/risk of bias using structured approaches appropriate to the project.
  • Critically review and analyze scientific studies and project datasets; conduct statistical/environmental data evaluations using common tools (e.g., ProUCL or equivalent) and document methods and assumptions clearly.
  • Coordinate professionally with AFCEC stakeholders and project teams; support technical briefings and presentations to government personnel and other stakeholders.
  • Support interactions with state and federal environmental regulatory agencies by preparing technical support content and participating in meetings as requested.
  • Maintain strong documentation discipline, support internal technical reviews, and contribute to continuous improvement of technical quality
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

 

Environmental Risk Assessor/Toxicologist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:  

  • Education/experience meeting one of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology, environmental health, or a related scientific discipline and 5+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Master’s degree in a related scientific discipline and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience supporting environmental restoration work under CERCLA and/or RCRA that includes risk assessment, toxicology, exposure assessment, and/or hazard assessment deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce and edit clear, defensible technical writing (reports, memoranda, deliverable sections, and briefings).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and coordinate effectively with distributed teams
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail; ability to clearly document assumptions, uncertainties, and limitations.
  • Practical understanding of exposure pathways, toxicity values, weight-of-evidence concepts, and uncertainty characterization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for client-facing coordination and stakeholder briefings.
  • Organized, deadline-driven, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
