APS-3: Heavy Equipment Mechanic

KBR maintains and manages Army prepositioned stocks at the Army Field Support Battalion - Charleston (AFSBn-CHS) land site to include all logistics and maintenance operations. The KBR APS-3 Program is managed and executed at Goose Creek in support of the Army's power projection doctrine and resources. The contract provides maintenance of APS-3 stocks (Class II, IIIP, IV, VII, IX) to ensure that unit sets are configured and maintained at optimal readiness. KBR also provides maintenance services and logistical support for other Army programs, IAW individual scope of work contract requirements.

Job Summary

Under general direction and with little guidance, repairs and assesses malfunctions, rebuilds, and performs maintenance on heavy equipment common to construction and military operations, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, tanks, personnel carriers, large diesel trucks, compressors and pneumatic tools. Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantle/reassemble equipment, examine parts for damage or excessive wear, etc. Replaces defective engines and subassemblies. Tests repaired/overhauled equipment to insure safe operating efficiency. May be responsible to weld broken parts, structures and other machinery/attachments. Requires High School graduation or equivalent and 2 years of experience as heavy equipment mechanic. Trade school training may be preferred. Specific contract qualifications will prevail, if different.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Analyze malfunctions and repairs.
  • Rebuild, and maintain power equipment such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantle, and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
  • Replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members.
  • At times direct workers engaged in cleaning parts.
  • Assist with the assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • Repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling, and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.
  • Perform field-level automotive maintenance on all equipment assigned or work-loaded to the assigned shop primarily material handling equipment including military and commercial forklifts, cranes, bulldozers, tractors, earth movers, and mine sweepers.
  • Perform field-level maintenance on U.S. military automotive equipment.
  • Perform technical inspections, diagnostics, parts identification and requisition, and repair in accordance with technical specifications and specified repair times.
  • Perform A/C repair and service on a wide range of automotive and material-handling equipment.
  • Interpret and apply technical instructions, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Update maintenance records and documentation in accordance with government regulations and local policies.
  • Properly use, store, account for, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste used and generated in the performance of duties.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and procedures for handling and disposal of refrigerant and related hazardous materials.
  • Handle the movement of material and assets with forklifts and dollies.
  • Comply with company and government-specified safety policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all established environmental regulations, methods, quality standards, and time schedules applicable to this position.
  • Upon notification from the government, deploy to support issuing or receipt of equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications (Required Education, Experience, Skills, and Certifications)

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Must have at least 8 years of directly related professional experience.

  • Must possess a valid State-issued Driver's License.

  • Must be able to provide your own personal tools that meet the required tool list, and be able to use government-furnished special tools and facilities.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain local base access.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Common Access Card (CAC) requirements.

  • Must have a certificate of training from a vocational school or other recognized source with a major study in automotive maintenance, or another related field. In lieu of formal course work, a combination of college credits, on-the-job training, other formalized training, or ASE certifications may be considered.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand - between 2 to 3 hours per day.

  • Must be able to walk - between 4 to 5 hours per day.

  • Must be able to Lift - up to 35 lbs. 50 lbs. periodically.

  • Must be able to squat, knell, bend, reach and climb periodically.

  • Must be able to work outside and inside in non-climate-controlled environments.

Preferred Qualifications (Preferred Education, Experience, Skills, and Certifications)

  • Expertise in military equipment.

  • EPA certification in the Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Program to be compliant with section 609 of the Clean Air Act.

  • Strong background in automotive maintenance.

  • Leadership and time management skills.

  • Written and oral communication skills.

  • Planning skills.

  • Computer literacy.
