Job Description

Job Summary Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Laboratory Services, the Blood Bank Supervisor oversees the daily administrative and technical operation of the Blood Bank and supervises a team of Medical Technologists. The supervisor assists with special projects, lab issues in the absence of the senior director, and participates in continuous improvement projects. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Full technical oversight of Transfusion Service functions and compliance with regulatory agencies (JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, American Association of Blood Banks, NCCLS, CLIA). Member of the Transfusion Committee and monitor performance of blood suppliers and usage of blood supply. Manage the Blood Bank budget and ensure financial targets are met. Generate or supervise the Internal Quality Assurance program; review Quality Control and CAP surveys. Prepare recall notification information/letters for laboratory director. Supervise and orient a team of Medical Technologists; oversee work, conduct performance evaluations, and manage staff. Monitor Transfusion Service procedures for quality, report errors, incidents, and audits to the appropriate Quality Assurance forums. Participate in investigational studies within section under guidance of the laboratory director. Act as a technical resource for medical, nursing, and other staff. Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and maintenance of equipment. Maintain the donor database and serve as authority on the Blood Bank computer system. Perform all routine and special procedures in the section. Respond to and supervise testing of adverse reactions to blood products and consult with Transfusion Service physicians. Report to the Senior Director of Lab Services on significant personnel, technical and financial matters as needed. Coordinate the Red Cross Blood drive at the Medical Center (four times a year). Complete Internal Quality Assurance forms when required. Perform other related duties as required. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related science and at least five years of experience in an accredited blood center or transfusion service, with a minimum of two years in management. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are acceptable. Preferred Qualifications Five years of supervisory experience. Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations MT ASCP, SBB ASCP or an equivalent certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to monitor, support, and evaluate Transfusion Service staff, including conflict resolution. Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and flow‑charting software. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and carry out complex procedures. Knowledge of current scientific, regulatory, and management skills applicable to a management position in a scientific discipline. Capacity for analysis, creative thinking, seeking innovative alternatives, and harmonizing dissent. Strong organizational and troubleshooting skills. Compensation The salary range for this position is $80,500.00–$117,000.00, based on the minimum job qualifications.
