Director of Human Resources

Position Summary

The Director of Human Resources serves as a strategic leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all human resources functions within a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This role partners closely with executive leadership to cultivate a high-performing workforce while ensuring compliance with employment laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team and provide strategic guidance on workforce planning, talent management, and organizational development.
  • Align HR strategies with organizational goals, mission, and values.
  • Analyze workforce trends and recommend solutions to support growth and sustainability.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on key HR metrics to executive leadership.
  • Talent Acquisition & Workforce Development
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention initiatives.
  • Develop strategies to attract and retain high-performing, mission-driven employees.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and opportunity in hiring practices.
  • Partner with department leaders to identify staffing needs and development opportunities.
  • Implement succession planning and career development programs.
  • Design and implement comprehensive employee training programs.
  • Develop onboarding processes that support long-term employee success.
  • Create department and individual development plans that enhance performance and growth.
  • Develop leadership training programs for supervisors, managers, and emerging leaders.
  • Build partnerships with educational institutions, workforce development agencies, and community organizations.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable workplace culture.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to leaders on employee relations and performance matters.
  • Lead investigations related to employee concerns, grievances, and policy violations.
  • Ensure consistent and equitable application of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Support employee engagement and recognition initiatives.
  • Oversee performance evaluation and feedback processes.
  • Train leaders on coaching, documentation, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Implement systems that promote accountability and organizational excellence.
  • Ensure consistency in performance management practices across departments.
  • Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Maintain employee handbooks, HR policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee leave administration, accommodations, workers' compensation claims, and unemployment matters.
  • Partner with legal counsel and external consultants as necessary.
  • Maintain confidential employee records and documentation.
  • Administer employee compensation and benefits programs.
  • Manage benefits administration and vendor relationships.
  • Foster collaboration, accountability, and exceptional customer service within the HR function.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive human resources leadership experience.
  • Experience in employee relations, performance management, compliance, recruitment, and organizational development.
  • Proven success developing and implementing employee training and professional development programs.
  • Strong knowledge of California employment laws and HR best practices.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Professional HR certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR preferred.
  • Experience within nonprofit, healthcare, social services, behavioral health, housing, or other mission-driven organizations.
  • Experience supporting a diverse workforce with varied educational, professional, and lived experiences.

Pay Details: $40.00 to $45.00 per hour
